Put ecology first, the economy second

February 5, 2016

Ecology and economy come from the same Greek word: oikos, meaning home. Ecology is the study of our home and economy is its management. In this mind-opening talk, internationally renowned spiritual thinker and educator Satish Kumar draws attention to the pervasive lack of a genuine understanding of nature in our education systems, which is contributing to the gross mismanagement of our planet. Kumar makes a compelling case for a more holistic approach to education, connecting our hands, hearts as well as heads.

Satish Kumar is a world renowned speaker on ecological and spiritual issues. When he was only nine years old, Satish renounced the world and joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. He left the monastic order and became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi’s vision of a peaceful world into reality, before undertaking an 8,000 mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to America without any money, through deserts, mountains, storms and snow. Since 1973 he has been Editor at Resurgence and Ecologist magazine and his books include No Destination; You Are Therefore I Am; Spiritual Compass; Earth Pilgrim.

Introverts, Extroverts, and the Complexities of Team Dynamics

MAR15_16_88647991

Let’s start with a short personality test. For each of the following dimensions, indicate the extent to which each of the following words describes you, with a 5 indicating “very much so” and a 1 indicating “not at all”: assertive, talkative, bold, not reserved, and energetic. Now sum up your scores. What’s the total?

If you scored under 10 points, you are likely to have an introverted personality rather than an extroverted one. If that is the case, you are certainly not alone. Studies find that introverts make up one-third to one-half of the population. Yet most workplaces are set up exclusively with extroverts in mind, a fact that becomes clear when you look at traits associated with the two personality types.

Classrooms of the Future

If asked to envision the classroom of the future, most would see a proliferation of technological advancements from within the classroom walls. Newer, shinier outlets for teachers to dispense information, tablets in every students’ hands, and more tools to communicate student learning. But what if the greatest pedagogical advancement of the future took the teacher from the front of the classroom and put them among their students as they practice and collaborate for the whole class period? What if the teacher was moved from behind the podium to a laptop screen in each child’s home? And what if such a movement was happening right now?
